5 Hacks to Help You Get Up for an Early Morning Workout

Healthy Living Hack: Sleep in your workout clothes.

and other ideas to get to the gym
Sleep in your workout clothes

I like working out when I am finished. Motivating myself to get there in the first place is the hard part. I have designed my workout routine in a way the makes it super convenient for me to go. Here is what I have done to maximize convenience:

I workout in the morning right after I wake up. I find it easiest not have too many decisions for me to make before working out or I might just talk myself out of it. Making things convenient for a habit means I am more likely to keep that habit.

  1. Sleep in Your Workout Clothes
The first thing I do to encourage myself to go is I sleep in my workout clothes. No deciding what to wear and I tell myself I can sleep longer because I am already dressed. Those 3 extra minutes are important to me mentally. Also, I think my gym clothes are really comfortable to sleep in. Another it helps my mindset. I mentally made the decision to go the night before. I don’t even have to decide whether or not to go.
  2. Keep It Simple
My wake up routine is pretty sparse and specific. I brush my teeth and put my hair up. I put on my socks and shoes which are in the same place everyday (those are the only shoes I manage to put away everyday). I drink a pre-workout drink and fill my water bottle. Then I leave. That’s it. This works for me. I get up at 5:50 AM and am out the door by 6:00 AM. I have it down to the minute. If I give myself anymore time, I will find a reason not to go. There is always work. There is always house stuff. There is always kid stuff. I can manage to overlook them when I don’t have a second to spare.
  3. Make Sure the Gym Is Convenient
Where I work out only takes me minutes to get there. I have found if I have to go somewhere too far away, I am likely to not go. I do not workout at home because I get distracted by all the stuff going on at my house.
  4. Workout in a Class
Where I workout, I do a class. I am not self disciplined enough to consistently complete a good exercise routine on my own.
  5. Workout in a Place that You Have to Sign Up for that Class
I have to make an appointment for my class. While that may be an inconvenience to some, it is accountability piece for me. I am in the mindset that I am going to workout when I wake up because it was scheduled.

To be quite honest, I did not do these things on purpose. I started working out at a local gym and I kept going. I went for 3 years consistently. It was amazing!! Then I moved to a new state and my routine changed. My habit started to dwindle. I spent some time trying to recreate what worked and I think I finally figured it out.

My advice is to look at what is working for you now and what has worked for you in the past. Do that. Don’t try to force what you think you should do. Don’t do what I do unless it is perfect for you. Do what works and you will see progress. The adage is “Showing up is half the battle.” Figure out how to show up and the rest will be easier.

I would love to hear what works for you. How do you design your workout routine in a way that keeps you consistent? If you don’t already have a routine how are you going to create one?
