Profile of Fit Over 50 Fitness

Fit Over 50

Fit Over 50 is a boutique fitness studio located in Eagle, Idaho and owned is by Geoff Edwards. Boutique fitness is a growing trend (which I am totally on board with) that typically offers classes and focuses on a specific segment of people or activities or types of exercise. I was able to personally experience 2 classes at his gym. I took a Fit class and did one Tai Chi lesson.

Mission / Philosophy for your business:

Mission Statement

Fit over 50 is a gym that focuses on Functional Fitness. The activities of functional fitness mimic real life movements. Fit Over 50 helps individuals gain or maintain the freedom they want to enjoy the things they need to do, like to do, and dream to do outside of the gym. Clients workout in groups in scheduled classes. There are 2 types of classes offered; Circuit Training and Tai Chi.

What type of clients fit your business best?

Fit over 50 is designed for older adults who are active and looking to continue with an active lifestyle. As the business name suggests, the target group is over 50 but not limited to that age group. If you are looking for a small group functional fitness class that feels like personal training, even if you haven’t reached the magic age of 50, this is a gym that can work for you.

What do your clients enjoy most?

The regular members enjoy the community and friendships they have made by attending classes. They also like the ability to have many different levels accommodated in each class. Geoff keeps the energy up with encouragement throughout the class. He even has themed workouts through the year to help celebrate holidays.

How long have you been in business?

Fit Over 50 has been located in Eagle, ID for 2 1/2 years. Geoff has been focusing on the over 50 age group for the last 3 years. Geoff found that clients wanted to be able to continue activities such as golfing, skiing, hiking, etc. They wanted someone that would develop training programs that weren’t geared for people in their twenties or put them on a machine. Geoff started designing circuits for his clients that would safely and effectively challenge them.

Benefits of Functional Fitness:

We reach, bend, lean, turn, twist, stoop, and change direction constantly throughout the day. Functional fitness focuses less on isolating particular muscle groups and more on exercises that mimic real life movements. Geoff takes the time to find out each of his clients fitness level before they begin classes. He is then able to modify each activity for each client to be more challenging or adapt to a particular injury or limitation one may have.

Benefits of Tai Chi:

Tai Chi is shown to have tremendous benefits as we age. It is often referred to as “meditation in motion.” It helps reduce stress, improve memory, improve mood, improve sleep, improve cognitive function in older adults, and help with weight loss. This is a short list. There are many more benefits, especially for older adults. Tai chi is generally considered to be a safe exercise with few side effects. You may experience some aches or pains after practicing tai chi if you’re a beginner. More rigorous forms of tai chi and improper practice of tai chi are associated with increased risk of injury to joints.

My 2 Cents:

I really enjoyed the classes that I attended at fit over 50. You can read my personal review on my blog post, This week: Fit Over 50. Geoff offers the ability to drop in to classes. I plan on continuing with Tai Chi. I love the “meditation in motion” aspect. I recommend checking out Fit Over 50 if you are in the Treasure Valley.

Next week I will be working out at Kaia Fit in Boise. Kaia Fit has 40 locations mostly in the Western US. They are a women’s fitness program that specializes in delivering personalized training in a group atmosphere.
